Abstract Elizabeth Murphy Moss (1917-1998) was a former reporter, editor, and publisher of the "Baltimore Afro-American" newspaper and the first Black woman to serve on the Baltimore City school board. Her grandfather founded the newspaper in 1892 and her father edited it from 1922 to 1967. Moss graduated from Baltimore's Frederick Douglass High School and she received a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Minnesota.
