Biographical / Historical

Daguerreotype portrait of Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte (1830-1893), a Baltimore native and soldier in the army of France's Second Republic. The son of Jerome Napoleon "Bo" Bonaparte (1805-1870) and his wife, Susan May Williams (1812-1881), Jerome graduated from West Point Military Academy, but resigned from the Army in 1854 to serve in the army of his cousin, Emperor Napoleon III. He served in the Crimean War, Algeria, the Italian campaign, and the Franco-Prussian War; and returned to the United States following the Siege of Paris.

In 1871, Bonaparte married Caroline Le Roy Appleton Edgar (1840-1911), who was the daughter of Samuel Appleton of Boston and the widow of Newbold Edgar of New York. The couple had two children: Louise Eugenie (1873-1923), married Count Adam Carl von Moltke-Huitfeld; and Jerome Napoleon Charles (1878-1945), married Blanche Pierce Strebeigh.
