Biographical / Historical

John Fife Symington Jr.(1910-2007), was born in Baltimore to Arabella Hambleton and John Fife Symington. After graduating from Princeton University in 1933, he worked as a pilot for Pan American Airlines. He unsuccessfully ran for Congress in Maryland's 2nd congressional district in 1958, 1960, and 1962, and campaigned for Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater in 1964. After Richard Nixon was elected President in 1969, Symington was appointed as an ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago, a post that he held until 1971. He married Martha Howard Frick in 1939, and they had four children, including J. Fife Symington III, one time governor of Arizona. Symington junior died in Baltimore at the age of 97.

Content Description

This collection contains photograph and manuscript materials on the life of J. Fife Symington, Jr. Materials include a photo album (circa 1922-1924), 5 bound journals about trips abroad (1925, 1931-1932) and 1 scrapbook on political life (circa 1958). Collection items contain personal history, variously depicting Symington, Jr.’s family life, showing the perspective of an American abroad during travels, and documenting his time in politics.
