Scope and Contents

Business correspondence of Robert Carter (1728-1804) of Nomini Hall, Virginia, between 1775-1804. Concerns Baltimore Iron Works (letters mainly from Clement Brooke); provision of enslaved laborers for the Works, sale of iron in Maryland and low prices (1780), shipments of bar iron and pig iron, supplies (corn, pork, wheat etc.). Mention of law suit brought by Robert Carter against Daniel Dulaney. Miscellaneous correspondence on wheat and other business matters. Correspondents include Clement Brooke, Richard and Robert Lemmon, Edward Melburne, J. Bradford, William Hammond, James Hunter, Henry Morse, Robert Prentis, John Ridout, John Schan, Samuel Beall, Charles Carroll of Carrollton, Merryman and Hubey and others. Also from David Stodder on building a schooner. Later correspondence is to George Carter, after the death of Robert.

Records of rents due and paid on properties owned by Robert Carter and debts collected. Kept by Dennis Connell and William Askew, successive clerks.
