Historical Note

It is not clear how this collection of photographs came to have the name Leisenring attached to it, but presumably the photographs were made or the collection donated by someone of that name.

In 1864 there were two Leisenrings in Baltimore city. One was Gideon Leisenring, proprietor and resident of the Franklin House hotel at Franklin and Howard Sts. Also living in that hotel was Gideon's brother, George W., a coal dealer who later lived at 106 N. Greene St. In 1903, a Mrs. Georgiana M. Leisenring lived at 406 N. Greene St.

There were Leisenrings in Lutherville; the grandson of Lutherville's founder John G. Morris was Luther Morris Leisenring (1875-1965), son of G.M. Leisenring. Luther Morris Leisenring did make photographs, some of which are part of the Needham Collection (PP65). He also donated photographic and other materials to the Maryland Historical Society on several occasions, but there is no evidence that he made or donated the present collection.
