Scope and Contents
This collections contains business papers of Simon Long (fl. 1863-1867) and Hamilton Downs (fl. 1850-1878), merchants in Williamsport, Washington County, Maryland during the Civil War period. The collection includes correspondence, receipts, and attachments documenting the sale of wheat, corn, livestock, and whiskey. In addition to the business papers, the collection also contains Downs family papers. The bulk of this material consists of Hamilton Downs' personal correspondence, and letters written by Charles Downs to family members when he attended St. John's College in Annapolis Maryland.
