Includes audio recordings, tape indexes, and a partial transcript.

Biographical / Historical

The Baltimore Interfaith Series is a collection of interviews with Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish religious leaders conducted by Dr. Lenora Nast in preparation for her doctoral dissertation on the role of the clergy in Jewish-Christian relations in Baltimore during the period between 1945-1975. A subsequent article, "The Clergy and the Interfaith Movement: 1945-1980,” appeared in the book, Baltimore: A Living Renaissance, also co-edited by Nast.

Interviewees include Marion Bascom, Pastor of the Douglas Community Church and civil rights activist; David Glenn, Assistant Secretary of the State Department of Human Resources beginning in 1973; Dr. Louis Kaplan, President of Baltimore Hebrew College; Father Joseph Gallagher, Editor of the Catholic Review, 1959-1966; Lawrence Cardinal Shehan, Archbishop of Baltimore, 1962-1974.

Scope and Contents

Includes 23 oral histories with various religious leaders in Baltimore, Maryland. Topics discussed in this series include: methods to achieve interfaith understanding; the role of politics and the media in interfaith activities; organization and goals of various religious and interfaith organizations including the Office of the Clergy Brotherhood of Maryland, Interfaith Council of Metropolitan Baltimore, Maryland Churches United, Associated Catholic Charities, and Associated Jewish Charities; the civil rights movement; 1963 Gwynn Oak Park demonstrations; Vietnam War protests; (Please see the interview summaries on the inventory page for more topics).

Materials available for this series include audio recordings for each interview and tape indexes for 21 of the interviews. There is a partial transcript available for OH 8231, Father Joseph Connolly.

OH 8071, which is not part of this series, consists of an interview with Lenora Nast in which she discusses her doctoral dissertation and the oral history interviews she conducted for it.
