Abstract

The collection consists of letters of Sephonia Furlong Baldwin of Waterbury, Anne Arundel County from son Lewis Warrington Baldwin while employed with the Illinois Central Railroad, 1897-1901. The collection also contains letters from Mrs. Baldwin's husband and friends. Also included is the personal correspondence of Reverend Henry Furlong (1822-1886), from parishioners, family, friends, containing news of events in the Baltimore District of Methodist Episcopal church.

Biographical / Historical

Lewis Warrington Baldwin

President of the Missouri Pacific Railway Company General offices in St. Louis. Unfortunate financial conditions developed in 1933 and the corporation was placed in the hands of a trustee, with Baldwin remaining as chief financial officer. On May 14, 1946 he suffered a heart attack at his home and died there. He was succeeded as CEO by Paul J. Neff.

Baldwin was a native of Waterbury, Anne Arundel, Maryland; the son of Richard Baldwin and Sophronia Jane Furlong. His mother was the daughter of a widely known Maryland clergyman, the Reverend Henry Furlong, of Baltimore. He took as his wife Miss Marye Dodge. He received a Bachelor of Science from St. John's College, Annapolis, MD in 1893; with further education at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA, 1896.

Entered service engineering department, Illinois Central Railroad, 1896, eventually becoming general superintendent of the Illinois Central and Yazoo & Mississippi Valley railways. Vice-president in charge of operating department, I.C.R.R. Lasttly, President and member of Executive Committee and CEO of the Missouri Pacific Company, and subsidiary companies, beginning 1923.

In 1925, the couple purchased one of the fine old mansions of the private estate known as #23 Westmoreland Place. The home was in their family until 1950; then demolished. Mr. Baldwin served as president of the St. Louis Symphony Society. He was director of the the St. Louis chapter of the S.A.R.; and a director of St. Luke's Hospital, St. Louis. He also served as the chairman of Region 8, Boy Scouts of America.

The Baldwins were the parents of Richard Baldwin, Roccena Baldwin, and L. Warrington Baldwin.
