Scope and Contents
The Carey and Kimber families photograph collection consists of one box of 17 folders and one box of two albums consisting of approximately 300 items. Most of the items in the collection are carte de visites featuring portraits of Carey and Kimber family members, from circa 1860 – 1913, as well as a number of unrelated or unidentified individuals. Many of the photographs are identified both by subject and date. Of those which are dated most are from the 1860’s and 1870’s. The folders are organized according to family with photographs of Carey family members primarily located in Folders one through six and Kimber family members occupying the rest. There are also a few photographs of Octorara house, a farm house built in the early nineteenth century and located in Conowingo Maryland. The house was once owned by Mr. James Carey. The collection also includes two albums containing carte de visites primarily featuring members of the Kimber side of the family, as well as a number of unrelated or unidentified individuals.
Among the items in the collection are photographs of Martha Carey Thomas, author and suffragist Hannah Whitall Smith, and her son, essayist and critic Logan Pearsall Smith. Most of the Photographs in the collection were taken in Baltimore. There are a few photographs that were taken in Germany; One photograph, labeled “Berlin 1865, Frontispiece of Book”, was taken in Berlin, Germany.
