This hand-colored etching is believed to be the work of William Charles, a Scottish caricaturist and etcher who came to the United States in the early 1800s. This attribution stems from the "Account book of Mathew Carey, Oct. 12, 181[4]," held by the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, Mass. The book includes an entry recorded as "To Wm. Charles Dr.--To Eng. plate--Burning Havre de Grace--$20.00." A second etching, a similar but redrawn version of the view, is also attributed to Charles.
