Scope and Contents
The Krause Papers have now been arranged into six series, with a different order than originally received from the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland.
Series I: School and Lecture Notes is a collection of class notes from subjects taken in high school, medical school, and later courses in oriental history and languages.
Series II: Military Service contains records of Krause’s activities in World Wars I and II, in many different forms: official reports and orders, maps, travel guides, newspapers, postcards, pamphlets, manuals, theater tickets and programs, song lyrics, and a diary. All these documents are not cleanly separated by type, but rather are mixed together in the folders. More than three quarters of the material is from World War I.
Series III: Correspondence and Family Papers preserves the many letters Krause wrote to family members during World War I and later. The general Correspondence section documents his connections with Baltimore area hospitals and MedChi, plus his relationship with Wendell Phillips, oil magnate and archaeologist. An entire box is filled with letters of thanks and appreciation for Krause’s services.
Series IV: Articles, Speeches, and Programs provides the texts of Krause’s public speeches and journal publications—often difficult to tell apart, since many are in undated typescript. Krause did publish medical research, but most of the articles and speeches are on topics of general interest, with an emphasis on medical themes in the Bible. Also preserved here are radio and TV scripts, notes and clippings used for speeches, plus two entire boxes full of programs for the events at which Krause spoke.
Series V: Travel Diaries and Scrapbooks offers writings and memorabilia from Krause’s extensive travels in Europe and the Middle East; some of these are from his sisters Louise Krause and Annabel Kimball.
Series VI: Personal Records and Ephemera includes a large variety of items such as school memorabilia, member IDs and certificates, and a removed splinter. Some larger and oddly shaped items are in Flat Box B.
