Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Ridgely and Goodwin ledgers are in two vols., the first dating 1768-84 and the second 1770-75. Among the names listed are those of several Dorseys. Charles Ridgely and William Goodwin were married to daughters of Caleb Dorsey of "Belmont". Accounts for the Northampton Furnace are listed as well. The Goodwin and Russell letterbook covers the dates 1774-84. Thomas Russell became a warden of the Port of Baltimore in 1783. At least one of the ships mentioned, "Beggars Benison" was a privateer.

An account book running 1774-1781 also seems to belong to Goodwin and Russell. It lists sales of cargo from various ships, including the privateers Donia Antonio and General Gates. Thomas Russell, John McClure, and William Hammond were listed as owners in the General Gates' letters of marque and reprisal. Another account book 1783-85. Names included are Sam Smith, R. & A. McKim, Robert Gilmor & Co., and Charles Carroll.
