Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

In 1990-1991, Robert Lyon Mayall compiled his research on his family, and wrote four lengthy letters to his children in England, summarizing his findings. These letters from the Robert Lyon Mayall Collection.

The Mayall family was descended from such notable Baltimoreans as Betsy Bonaparte (1785-1879), Samuel Smith (1752-1839), William Patterson (1752-1835), General Joseph McClure Sterrett (1771-1821), and the Hollins family.

The typescripts focus on Betsy Patterson's marriage and life with Jerome Bonaparts, merchant life in eighteenth and nineteenth century Baltimore, and the War of 1812, especially the Battle of Bladensburg, the Battle of North Point, and privateers.

Four typescripts:

Elizabeth Spear Patterson Bonaparte and the American Bonapartes

General Joseph McClure Sterrett and the Battles of Bladensburg and North Point; Anglo-American War of 1812-1815

The Hollins-Smith Cluster' of Armed Privateers in the Naval War of 1812-1815
