Biographical / Historical

Henry Banning Chew (1800-1866), the son of Benjamin Chew (1758-1844) of Philadelphia and Katherine Banning (1770-1855), was a Baltimore shipping merchant. He farmed Epsom, the Baltimore County estate bequeathed to his first wife, Harriet Ridgely (1803-1836) by her father. At her death, he administered the estate for the benefit of their children. Henry B. Chew and Harriet Ridgely had seven children: Catherine (1823-1824); Priscilla Ridgely (1824-1837); Charles Ridgely (1827-1875); Benjamin (1830-1885); Samuel (1832-1887) married Mary Johnson Brown; Achsah Carroll (1834); and Henry Banning (1835-1855).
