Biographical / Historical

Robert Carey Long, Jr., (1810-1849) was a Baltimore architect, best-known for the Gothic revival monumented gateway of Green Mount Cemetery (1839). Long was the son of Robert Carey Long, Sr., (1770-1833), also a prominent architect. In 1837, he married Elizabeth Walker Edes (1817-1883), daughter of Benjamin Edes of Baltimore. The couple were parents to Mary Edes (1840-1907), married John Stears; Walter (1842-); Janet Duncan (1844-1862); and Benjamin Edes (1847-1881).
