Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Jewell collection of World War II papers consists of five series: Series I: Currency; Series II: Manuscripts and Ephemera; Series III: Photographs; Series IV: Magazine and Newspaper clippings; Series V: Reference materials.

Series I: Currency, consists of five subseries arranged according to the country to which the currency belonged, including France, Germany, and the Netherlands. This series also contains Allied Military Currency (AMC), a military currency distributed to soldiers who oftentimes were unable to use local currencies in hostile combat zones. Similarly, the series contains a one shilling note issued by the British Military Authority in 1943 for the use of British troops in North Africa.

Series II: Manuscripts and Ephemera, contains correspondence and a greeting card, identification and membership cards, and various military records including immunization register, enlistment history, and a citation for the bronze medal. These materials were collected by Jewell during the course of his service in the United States Army, and represent his experience as an officer in the Medical Service Corps.

Series III: Photographs, contains ten photographs of Lieutenant Jewell while on active duty in Europe in 1944. All of the photographs are inscribed on the reverse with a note from Jewell, frequently to his wife Carolyn.

Series IV: Magazine and Newspaper clippings, contains two articles from an unidentified newspaper, and one article from Life magazine. The two newspaper articles directly reference Lieutenant Jewell, while the magazine article profiles a wounded soldier from the 35th Infantry Division.

Series V: Reference materials, contains a printed web page, journal articles, and photocopies of original military documents. These materials serve to provide historical background and context about the 35th Infantry Division and the men with whom Lieutenant Jewell served.
