Summary: This book is in part the diary of Colonel Charles E. Phelps (1833-1908) of the 7th Maryland Infantry Regiment of the Union Army, with entries dated from 1864 January 1 to 1864 May 7. It was confiscated from him when he was wounded and taken prisoner at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House in Virginia. The book was forwarded to the Headquarters of General Robert E. Lee and then referred to General Martin Luther Smith (1819-1866)--Chief of Engineers, C.S.A--and afterwards used by him for a diary. Beginning on 1864 May 8 and through 1864 December 31, the entries are in Smith's handwriting.
