Anita Rose Williams, 1980
Abstract
Anita Rose Williams (1891-1983) was the first Black Catholic social worker in the United States, as well as the first Black supervisor employed by a social agency in Baltimore. In this interview, she discusses her early life and her work as housekeeper for Mrs. Francis King Carey. She notes how she was voted to the Board of Directors of the Colored YWCA and touches on her work on the Provident Hospital Board and Women's Cooperative Civic League. Williams discusses attending lectures at Johns Hopkins University and her career and assignments with Associated Catholic Charities. Other topics include her relationship with Judge Waxter, the Baltimore Urban League, membership in the NAACP and work in civil rights movement, as well as her experiences with the Hutzler Brothers Department Store.
