Scope and Contents
The collection contains almost 1,000 images of steamboats that traversed the Chesapeake Bay. H. Graham Wood collected photographs, newspaper and magazine clippings, advertisements, and prints related to the numerous steamboats and steamboat lines that operated out of Baltimore for his book, “Steamboats out of Baltimore,” which he co-wrote with Robert H. Burgess and published in 1968. A number of Maryland professional and amateur photographers are represented in the collection, including John Dubas. Original photographs by Wood and Burgess are also included. Nearly every steamboat and line that travelled the Chesapeake Bay is documented in the collection. Wood also especially collected images published in local publications, such as the Baltimore Sun and Baltimore Magazine. A significant portion of the photographs came from maritime-related museums and societies, such as the Mariners Museum and Steamship Historical Society of America. Most of these images bear the stamps of said institutions.
