Biographical / Historical

Born in Scotland, William Dunlop Brackenridge was a nurseryman and botanist. He emigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1837 and was appointed horticulturalist, then assistant botanist, for the United States Exploring Expedition (also known as the Wilkes Expedition) from 1838 to 1842. This was an exploring and surveying expedition of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding lands conducted by the United States. After 1855, Brackenridge lived in Baltimore, Maryland and worked as a nurseryman and landscape architect.

Scope and Contents

Letters of William D. Brackenridge concerning the Wilkes Expedition of 1838 as well as botanical gardens. Correspondents include Captain Charles Wilkes, John Torrey, Asa Gray, Johns Hopkins, R. W. McClelland. Journals (6 volumes) record daily events of Wilkes Expedition and later expeditions in Oregon and California kept by Brackenridge. Describe places visited, with observations on botanical life. Volumes 3-6 are notes that are also included in volume 2. The majority of letters are photostatic copies.
