Scope and Contents

Large collection of material on many aspects of social life, mainly of the early 19th century. Subjects include transport (mail, coaches, steam boats), hotels and inns, social functions, education, and various trades. Material consists of advertisements, tickets, accounts, certificates of stock, and broadsides.

Typed list of social invitations, circa 1780-1920 is included. Collection contains lottery tickets, broadside announcements, etc. - from Washington Monument Lottery and numerous others. Typed list of lottery material, circa 1750-1856, also included, with roughly 75 items. The box also contains some lottery material labelled as not coming from the Hayden Collection. Source unknown. The collection is labelled "Hayden Collection" passim, but has no indication of its source or the date of accession. It can be assumed to be the collection of William M. Hayden, banker and member of the Maryland Historical Society, from a covering letter addressed to him with one of the items. Note dated July 19, 1976: MS 140 according to the NUCMC sheet, "can be assumed to be the collection of William H. Hayden," although there is "no indication of its source or the date of accession."

The collection consisted primarily of stage coach line and inn advertisements cut out from eighteenth and early nineteenth century newspapers. These items, along with the social invitations that were part of the collection, have been removed to the Graphics Division. The samples of steamboat line advertisements were removed to the Radcliffe Maritime Museum, while some miscellaneous articles on old hotels, inns, and Maryland families were placed in the care of the library. The remaining material--one receipt, one pledge, one letter dated 1838, a photostat of a letter dated 1840 from Mrs. E. B. Watkins to Edwin F. Hayden, and a 1912 letter explaining the photostat-- was retained in the Manuscripts Division as MS 140.
