Scope and Contents

This collection contains five portraits of boxers that were collected by Baltimore boxer Jimmy Cross. There are three portraits of fellow bantamweight Baltimore boxer Kid Williams (1893-1963) and one portrait of American featherweight boxer Johnny Kilbane (1889-1957). These portraits include personal inscriptions to Cross. There is also one portrait of Cross, which includes his autograph.

Biographical Note

James Sirkis (1890-1958) was born in Baltimore, Maryland to Samuel Sirkis, a Russian immigrant. Under the name "Jimmy Cross," Sirkis boxed in Baltimore prior to World War I as a bantamweight. He and his wife, Eva, had three children and lived in northwest Baltimore.

Born in Austria-Hungary (today part of Western Ukraine), John Gutenko (1893-1963) arrived with his family in Baltimore in 1904. Six years later he began his boxing career fighting under the name "Kid Williams." Known as the "Baltimore Tiger," he earned the Bantamweight Championship world title after knocking out Johnny Coulon on June 9, 1914. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1996.

John Kilbane (1889-1957) was an American featherweight boxer in the early part of the 20th century. He held the World Featherweight title from 1912 to 1923.
