Biographical / Historical

James Carey of Loudon was born in 1751 in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1785 he married Martha Ellicott (1761-1838), who was the daughter of John Ellicott, one of the three Ellicott brothers who founded Ellicott's Mills. Together they had 7 children: John (1789-1849), James (1791-1813), Samuel (1791-1874), Hannah Carey Coale (1795-1837), Margaret Carey Cheston (1797-1874), George (1798-1865), and Martha Carey Thomas (1805-1835).

After his marriage, Carey most likely served as the Baltimore shipping agent for the flour produced at his in-law's mills, and became very wealthy. He built a townhouse at the southeast corner of Lobard Street and Hopkins Place. He also acquired a country seat on the Frederick Road, which he named "Loudon Forest", the 100 acres of which were considered during his lifetime to lie four miles outside Baltimore City. This land later came to be Loudon Park Cemetery.

By 1790, Carey was sufficiently prosperous to be elected to the original directorate of the Bank of Maryland, and he was active in public life for a number of years thereafter. He died in 1834 at the age of 83.
