Biographical / Historical
In the 19th and early 20th centuries one-room schoolhouses were common in the United States, particularly in the country's more rural areas. Such schoolhouses were prevalent in Calvert County, Maryland, one of the poorest counties in the state in the early 1900s. One narrator, John "Jack" Dawkins Briscoe, recalls that in the late 1930s to early 1940s there was only one high school in the entire county, Prince Frederick High School. Nonetheless, despite having 40, sometimes up to 70 children together in one room, and working under undesirable conditions, teachers worked to ensure schools ran efficiently and provided the best support they could to students.
