This collection contains the papers and photographs of the Appleby family of Maryland, along with related families of Shield, Ball, Welby, Martin, Irving, and Culver. Included are correspondence, poetry, genealogical notes, miscellaneous papers, and photographs, circa 1830-1980.

Scope and Contents
Appleby family papers and photographs, circa 1830-1980 (bulk circa 1830-1890). Collection contains correspondence, poetry, genealogical notes, miscellaneous papers, and photographs of the Appleby and related families of Shield, Ball, Welby, Martin, Irving, and Culver. Includes letter of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, 1842 August 15, and correspondence of poet Amelia Welby, as well as a copy of the fifth addition of her "Poems by Amelia" (New York: Appleton, 1848). Photographic portion of collection consists of 1/6 plate daguerreotype of Andrew Jackson Appleby, 1/6 plate tintype of Mrs. Andrew Jackson (Margaret Henckel) Appleby, 1/6 plate tintype of Elizabeth Sheild Appleby, 1/6 plate tintype of unidentified woman, and carte-de-viste of unidentified woman and unidentified Chinese man.
