Tilghman-Goldsborough papers
Abstract
This collection contains the papers of the Tilghman and Goldsborough families of Dorchester and Talbot County, Maryland, circa 1726-1864. Names associated with the papers are Charles Goldsborough (1707-1767), the father of Governor Charles Goldsborough, William Tilghman Goldsborough (1808-1876), Mary Tilghman Roberts (1753-1819), and Matthew Tilghman (1779-1828). Included are correspondence, wills, and land records.

Biographical / Historical
The branch of the Tilghman family relevant to this collection begins with William Tilghman (1711-1782). William was one of nine children born to Colonel Richard Tilghman (1672-1738) and Anna Maria Lloyd (1676-1748). His siblings included Colonel Edward Tilghman (1713-1786), James Tilghman (1716-1793), and Matthew Tilghman (1718-1790), head of the Maryland Delegation to the Continental Congress. William Tilghman served as a Justice of Queen Anne County from 1734-1751, and 1754-1760, and was the Presiding Justice from 1755-1760.
On August 2, 1736, William married Margaret Lloyd, his first-cousin on his mother's side. Their children included: Anna Maria (1737-1768), Richard (1740-1809), James (1742-1773), Margaret (1744-1779), Henrietta Maria (1749-1787), Mary (1753-1819), and Robert (1755-). The eldest daughter, Anna Maria, married Charles Goldsborough (1740-1769) on September 3, 1764. The couple had two children, Charles (1765-1834) and William (1766-1786). Their elder son was a member of the Maryland State Senate, and later served as the 16th Governor of Maryland from January-December 1819. Governor Goldsborugh and his second wife, Sarah Yerbery Goldsborough, were the parents of William Tilghman Goldsborough (1808-1876), who served as a member of the Maryland State Senate in 1850. William Tilghman Goldsborough and his wife Mary Eleanor "Ellen" Lloyd, are the great-great-great grandparents of Henry C. Pitts, the donor of this collection.

Scope and Contents
The Tilghman-Goldsborough papers consists of three series: Tilghman family, Goldman family, and Miscellaneous. The folders within each series are arranged chronologically, followed by undated materials. Series I, Tilghman family, contains manuscripts related to the children and grandchildren of William Tilghman (1711-1782) and Margaret Lloyd (1714-). Items of note in this series include the marriage contract and will of Mary Tilghman Roberts, as well as a file of correspondence from Matthew Tilghman to his aunt Mary Tilghman Roberts.
Series II, Goldsborough family, contains manuscripts related to the family of Anna Maria Tilghman (1737-1768) and her husband, Charles Goldsborough (1740-1769). This series includes the will of Charles Goldsborough (1707-1767), Anna Maria's father-in-law, a letter of advice from Sarah Yerbury Goldsborough to her son, William Tilghman Goldsborough, and a record of the births and baptisms of William Tilghman Goldsborough's children.
Series III, Miscellaneous, contains manuscripts that are not particularly associated with either the Tilghman family or the Goldsborough family. These include Dorchester county land papers, surveys for a tract of land called "Ennalls's Discovery", and various bonds and memorandums.
