Reverend John Hersey collection

This collection consists of the the personal papers, namely correspondence, belonging to Reverend John Hersey, a Methodist Episcopal minister who came to Baltimore in 1835 as a missionary preacher. The material was collected by the Reverend Fletcher E. Marine during the period 1870-1889 while he was in the course of writing Hersey's biography.

Biographical / Historical

The Reverend John Hersey was born August 2, 1786 in New Castle County, Delaware. He died at Penningtonville, Pennsylvania on November 17, 1862. During his life he was a Methodist Episcopal minister who spent many years in Baltimore. He also published a number of religious tracts. Hersey is the subject of the Sketch of Reverend John Hersey by the Reverend Fletcher E. Marine.

It is believed that this material was also given to the Maryland Historical Society by Harriet Perkins Marine. The material is unrestricted; but, once again, there is no official accession record on the material.

Scope and Contents

The Reverend John Hersey Collection covers the years 1829-1889, this being the years of his birth and death. The bulk of it falls into the period of the 1860s to the 1880s. There is a good deal of correspondence addressed to both the Reverend Hersey and to Reverend Marine. The Reverend Marine was seeking information about Hersey in order to w write his life story, which is included in this collection. The collection also contains some of the personal papers of Reverend John Hersey, with the bulk of this materical covering the period between 1829 to 1858.
