Scope and Contents

Jeremiah Townley Chase's legal papers include suits against Dr. John Stevenson over the administration of Richard Chase's estate and against the State of MD for compensation while Jeremiah Townley Chase was chief judge of the Court of Appeals. Other papers deal with Jeremiah T. Chase's attempt to obtain the rents from his father's and uncle Jeremiah's property in London and possible claims to land of Richard and Jeremiah Chase in NJ. Jeremiah T. Chase bought land in and around Baltimore, some in partnership with merchant Daniel Bowly (1745-1807) from whom there are several letters spanning the years 1792-1807. Also included in the collection are legal papers of Richard Loockerman (?-1792) and his son Richard Loockerman (ca. 1780-1834) who married Frances Townley Chase, Jeremiah T. Chase's daughter, in 1803. The younger Loockerman's papers concern the settlement of his father-in-law's estate. There are a few letters relating to the genealogy of the Chase and Loockerman families and some miscellaneous Chase and Loockerman correspondence and legal papers.
