Biographical / Historical

The Dulany family came to the American colonies from Ireland in the early 1700s and quickly rose to prominence. Daniel Dulany the Elder (1685-1753) was a respected and accomplished lawyer who served in the Maryland Assembly. He and his family moved from Port Tobacco to Annapolis in 1720. His Annapolis estate eventually became the site of the United States Naval Academy. He married Rebecca Smith (ca. 1695-1737), and they had seven children. Their son Walter Dulany (d. 1773) also became an attorney and served as Commissary General of Maryland, as well as mayor of Annapolis. He married Mary Grafton (d. 1801), and they had three sons, Daniel, Walter, Jr., and Grafton, and four daughters, Rebecca, Mary, Margaret, and Catharine. Catharine Dulany (1758-1830) married Dr. Horatio Sharp Belt (d. 1796) in 1783.
