Abstract

This collection is comprised of three scrapbooks of newsclippings compiled by Doctor Joshua I. Cohen. These scrapbooks cover the entirety of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865.

Biographical / Historical

Doctor Joshua I. Cohen was born in 1801 as one of the children of Israel I. Cohen and Judith S. Cohen. He graduated from the University of Maryland Medical School in 1823. He became the Treasurer of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland inn 1839 and served until 1857, when he became its President. He served in that capacity from 1857 to 1858. He later taught as a professor of geology and minerology at the University of Maryland, and served in several other notable posts, including with the American Philosophical Society, the Maryland Historical Society, and the Anacreontic Society. Like his brothers, he also worked towards promoting rights for Jews in Maryland. He died in 1870.

Newsclippings collected by Doctor Joshua I. Cohen covering the years 1861 through 1865. Contains clippings on all phases of the Civil War including major battles, editorials dealing with the crisis, printed speeches of the President, Congressmen and Senators, aricles of local Baltimore interest especially the arrest of Southern sympathizers.
