Biographical / Historical

In 1980-1981, the Maryland Historical Society's Prints and Photographs Division received funding from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) to create descriptive inventories of their many collections of glass and nitrate film photographic negatives. The grant also provided for the printing of all the negatives, for the creation of copy negatives for the images, and for the rehousing of the original negatives. Among the glass negatives were many collections with well established provenances, however a large number of negatives were present without clear provenance. These were assembled into this Glass Plate Negative Collection, PP11, circa 1890-1930.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 6 boxes, five of which contain 734 modern photoprints made at the Maryland Historical Society in the 1980s from glass plate negatives created ca. 1890-1930. For the majority of the images a duplicate/copy negative is available.

Box 6 contains roughly 790 prints identified as "non-archival", with items numbered PP11.1011 through PP11.1800. There is no descriptive inventory for these numbers, although some of the prints have descriptions written on the verso, and most have negative numbers. The set seems to directly duplicate the images in Boxes 1-5, although the reason for this duplication with different numbering is not known. Likewise, the whereabouts or existence of items PP11.735 through PP11.1000 is not known.

The images in this collection encompass all aspects of Maryland social, political and economic history, including: buildings, monuments, cemeteries, schools, businesses, industry, recreation, scenes, streets, transportation, residences, and parks. Maryland locations documented include Baltimore City, Annapolis, Ellicott City, Baltimore County, Harford County, Prince Anne's County, and Somerset County.
