Biographical / Historical
Marshall B. Holland, born on January 17, 1925, grew up in Hampstead, Maryland and served in the United States Army during World War II in the Second Combat Replacement Company. He attended school until the eighth grade and dropped out in 1932. Before enlisting with the army, Holland worked for the Western Maryland Railway Company in Port Covington, Maryland as a carman. He joined the army on August 22, 1941 and began his military career at Keesler Air Field in Biloxi, Mississippi. There, he went through basic Army Air Force basic training. In 1942, he transferred to the Victorville Army Flying School in California, where he received further training and worked as a stock clerk. Holland was sent to Europe in 1944. With the army, he trekked across France and Germany. Holland was released from service on December 10, 1945, and returned to his job with the Western Maryland railroad. He married Elise Shaffer, but was killed on August 25, 1956 in a railway accident.

Scope and Contents
The collection contains photographs taken and collected by Marshall B. Holland during his service in World War II. He sent many of the photographs to his sister, Arzella Buechner, her husband, Anthony, and their son, Anthony Jr. (the donor of the collection), and are referenced in the letters he sent to them. The photographs are undated, but some include descriptions on the back. The dates are approximate.
