Biographical / Historical

The Steiger family lived near Laurel in Howard County, Maryland, where William Tell Steiger owned and operated Brightwood Farm. His wife, Hannah Van Patten Steiger, wrote newspaper articles for the American Farmer in the 1880s, as well as writing and editing The Quill during the same years.

One family member was George Nye Steiger, a graduate of Occidental College (Los Angeles, California) in 1906, and of Harvard University in 1914. In 1914, he married Susan LePage Cronmiller, a neighbor near his childhood home in Laurel. An expert on the Far East, Steiger taught at St. John's College in Shanghai, China, and was a correspondent for the Sunpapers on Chinese politics and society during the 1920s. He moved to teach at Harvard University in 1920, and later joined the faculty at Simmons College, staying until his retirement. He earned his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1923.
