Biographical / Historical

Rose Lindsay Hopkins Harvey (1897-1980) was the daughter of Isabel Luke Hopkins (1864-1946) and Robert Dixon Hopkins (1847-1921). She grew up at Beechfield, her family's home in Catonsville, and graduated from St. Timothy's School. Her husband was F. Barton Harvey (1891-1977), a Baltimore native and a graduate of the Calvert and Hill Schools, and of Harvard University in 1914. The two were engaged prior to World War I, in which F. Barton served as an army lieutenant in France, and married in 1919. They had seven children, and lived near Lake Roland in north Baltimore.

Among other activities, Rose Harvey was a board president of Union Memorial Hospital, a trustee of St. Timothy's School, a congregation leader at the Church of the Redeemer, and a Red Cross volunteer. She travelled widely, as had her mother, and kept diaries of her many trips to many continents. F. Barton Harvey, a founder of the insurance firm Stump, Harvey, Gavin, Inc., also served in many other capacities, including president of the Calvert School, and trustee of the Hannah More Academy, Church Hospital, and the Family and Children's Society.

Rose devoted much attention to raising her seven children: four daughters and three sons, many of whom had achieved prominence in their careers at the time of her death. For example, F. Barton Harvey, Jr. (b. 1921) became a managing director of Alex. Brown and Sons, Alexander Harvey II (b. 1923) a judge of the U.S. District Court, and Jean Baker (b. 1933) a professor of history at Goucher College. All three Harvey sons served in the military during World War II, with Robert Dixon Hopkins Harvey (b. 1920) going to the China-Burma-India theater.

Rose Hopkins Harvey's maternal grandfather William Luke was from a Scottish family who made a fortune in paper-making. Among William Luke's ancestors were John Luke and his son James, elders in the Fossoway Parish Church in Scotland. In circa 1910, William Luke made a substantial donation to the parish.
