Biographical / Historical

Augusta Adele Smith (1865-1957) was the daughter of Lavinia Cooper Reip Smith (1845-1885) and Joseph Stewart Smith. Joseph Smith was a banker/broker who lived at 1911 Eutaw Place in Baltimore. In 1891, Adele Smith married Benjamin Bohen Jones (1863-1943), and they moved to a house which Benjamin, a carpenter, built near Lake Roland. Their daughter Marguerite Allston Jones was born in 1892, and a son William Newton Jones was born in 1895 but died in 1899.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of one box containing one album with 34 photoprints, two ivorytypes and one tintype, and one folder with five photoprints, for a total of 42 photoprints. Subjects are portraits of Augusta Adele Smith Jones and her family members and friends, which are undated or from 1865-1901. Many of the portraits are unidentified; identified individuals include Lavinia Cooper Reip Smith, Benjamin Bohen Jones, Talbot and Helen Denmead, and Evans Rogers.

Note: Collection includes ephemera including an envelope with three valentines, several school certificates of Miss Adele A. Smith from the Academy at 27 Cathedral Street, 1877-1879, a 1976 calendar of Historic Baltimore County, and a large format (43 x 33 cm) scrapbook stamped with "Meriden Britannia Company, Illustrated Price List, Ellectro Silver Plate" on cover, containing pictures of home furnishings and other items.
