Bartlett Hayward Company records

The Bartlett Hayward Company of Baltimore, Maryland, was started in 1840 as Hayward & Company and was founded by stove manufacturers George Hayward and his brothers Jonas and Nehemiah. In 1846, Hayward & Company purchased Latrobe Stove Foundries. Shortly after this purchase, David Lewis Bartlett--a manufacturer from New England--joined the partnership. Consequently, the firm became known as Hayward, Bartlett and Company. The company frequently changed its name over the course of its existence.

The Baltimore-based company eventually became a leading manufacturer all over the country during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It expanded into the foundry, machinery, erection, gasholder, and engineering fields and became known for elaborate architectural ironwork. Among the Bartlett Hayward Company's more famous works include the architectural ironwork of the United States Capitol, the State House in South Carolina, and the interior of the Peabody Library of Baltimore. In 1927, the Bartlett Hayward Company merged with the Koppers Company, a diversified manufacturing corporation that was based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
