Biographical / Historical

Grove Hill, originally a farm located on the old Brighton Road, is on present-day New Hampshire Avenue in Brinklow, near Sandy Spring in Montgomery County, Maryland. The main house was built by Thomas Tyson and his wife, Mary Ellicott Tyson after they acquired the property in 1836, and presently incorporates buildings and additions from various eras, including log cabins from the late 1700s. The property passed to the Tyson’s daughter, Elizabeth Ellicott Tyson, in 1858, then to a cousin, Martha Tyson Smith Hopkins, the wife of Samuel Hopkins, in 1912. Martha Hopkins left the property to her three daughters in 1915, and it soon became the home of Mary Randolph Hopkins.

Mary Randolph Hopkins (died 1979) was the fourth child of Samuel and Martha Hopkins. She was the granddaughter of Joseph Hopkins, and the grandneice of Johns Hopkins. Mary Hopkins lived at Grove Hill from 1915 until her death in 1979.
