Abstract

This collection consists of photographs taken by Baltimore Sun photographer Richard Childress. Childress worked at the Sun from 1961 until his death in 1984. He covered virtually everything newsworthy for the paper over his more than two decade career: protests, sports, social and cultural events, politics, automobile accidents, house fires, fairs, festivals, and parades, military events, and more.

Biographical / Historical

Richard Childress was a photojournalist for the Baltimore Sun newspaper for over two decades. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, Childress was raised by an aunt and uncle in Baltimore. He graduated from City College and then joined the military where he served in West Berlin as an army photographer. Soon after returning to Baltimore in 1961, he joined the Sun papers. Known for his dry wit, sharp dress, and talent, Childress covered all aspects of the news for the paper. Childress died in December 1984 after battling cancer for six months.

Scope and Contents

The Richard Childress Photograph Collection consists of 32 boxes of more than 20,600 photographs. The collection includes prints and film negatives dating from late 1950s before Childress joined the Baltimore Sun, to 1984, the year he died. Childress covered virtually everything newsworthy for the Sun: protests, sports, social and cultural events, politics, automobile accidents, house fires, fairs, festivals, and parades, military events, and more.

The collection is broken down into 18 series. Series I – IX contain photographic prints. Series X – XVIII contain negatives.
