Scope and Contents
The administration accounts of Frederick Hammer's estate (vol. 2 of the collection) show that Margaret Hammer was the only heir and representative of the Deceased. Margaret Hammer was married to John H. Alexander in 1836.
Frederick Hammer's ledger (vol. 1 of the collection) was kept by himself up to folio 49 (as sworn to on folio 50). Beginning with folio 51, under date of October 1, 1836, the ledger was kept by J. H. Alexander, and not by Thomas S. Alexander, as stated in The Manuscript Collections. I have been working with J.H.A.'s handwriting for a long time, and immediately recognized it in the ledger.
The ledger after folio 50 contains a listing of John H. Alexander's assets as of October 1, 1836, and a record of his income from real estate and securities, many of which are obviously a part of his wife's inheritance.
For purposes of cross-indexing, you should know that the ledger as kept by J.H.A. also contains material dealing with the George's Creek Coal and Iron Company.
Folios 70 and 71 deal with the company's Allegany County lands.
A loose sheet, undated, in folio 75 has notes on Thomas S. Alexander's share in the company lands and on his expenses incurred on behalf of the company.
Folio 76, Office Account, notes amounts received by John H. Alexander, some of which presumably are in repayment of his disbursements for the company.
Folios 80 and 81 deal with transactions concerning Philip T. Tyson and Thomas S. Alexander, J.H.A.'s co-founders of the George's Creek Coal and Iron Company.
Folio 93 - office accounts, 1840.
A loose sheet, undated, in folio 93 possibly lists the names of the original stockholders of the company.
Folio 97 lists J.H.Alexander's transactions in George's Creek Company stock.
Folio 98 lists J.H.Alexander's transactions in George's Creek Company bonds.
Toward the back of the book, near the index, without folio number, are facing pages headed Disbursements in behalf of Geo. Creek c. and I. Co.
