Biographical / Historical

Benjamin J. Dashiell (1867-1943) was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, but lived most of his life in Baltimore, Maryland. A civil and mining engineer, he designed streetcar systems for a number of eastern cities. At one time, he was a mechanical engineering instructor at Maryland Institute and active in the US and Chile as a mining engineer.

Cassius M. Dashiell (1848-1935) graduated from the University of Virginia, relocating to Baltimore, MD where he practiced law for about 15 years. Moving to Princess Anne, MD, he took over his father’s packing business and became well-known in the industry. He served as secretary-treasurer of the Tri-State Packers’ Association.

As an officer of the Easton diocese of the Protestant Episcopal Church, Cassius Dashiell became interested in restoring old churches on the Eastern Shore. In later years, he was prominent in Eastern Shore historical research.
