Biographical / Historical
Dr. Charles Franklin Elvers was the first Marylander to fly an airplane in Maryland. Elvers grew up on a farm in Owings Mills, and from a young age, he was fascinated with aviation. He began building kites and eventually constructed a glider, named the “Undertaker’s Pet.” In 1909, he built his first fully functional biplane, which he was able to fly half a mile. An accident forced him to give up flying, and he decided to pursue medical research. During World War I, he travelled to France with the Johns Hopkins Hospital Unit. He returned to school in 1919 and studied at Hopkins’ School of Hygiene and Public Health. He had a varied career and was appointed as curator of American Anthropology for the Maryland Academy of Sciences. He died on April 8, 1954.
