Scope and Contents

This collection consists of letters to and from Howard J. Whelan, Jr. during May 1944 - June 1945 while he was an infantryman in the United States Army. The principle people writing and receiving the letters are: himself, his family, and his close friends. The letters mainly discuss Whelan's stateside Army life and overseas campaigning with the 274th Regiment of the 70th Division; the experiences of his friends in the service; and the wartime civilian life of his family and friends.

The collection consists of xerox copies of typed excerpts from the letters. The originals are in possession of the donor. The copies were made circa October 1978 by the donor so the material could be donated to the Maryland Historical Society.
