Biographical / Historical

Marcia Crocker Noyes was born in 1869 in Saratoga Springs, New York, the youngest of four children. In the early 1890s she moved to Baltimore and was soon working as a relief worker at the Enoch Pratt Library. In 1896, with little experience as a librarian under her belt, she was hired as Librarian at the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland, a position she held for fifty years. In 1934 she became the first woman and first non-physician to be elected as President of the Medical Librarians Association. By the end of her career, the library had amassed a collection of some 65,000 volumes. Noyes died on November 24, 1946. in her apartment above the library which she had lived in since 1909. Two years later the Medical Library Association named its highest award in Noyes honor, which “recognizes a career which has resulted in lasting, outstanding contributions to health sciences librarianship.”
