Biographical / Historical

The collection, originally held by the Peale Museum, appears to have been donated by T. Edward Hambleton, a prominent Broadway producer and avid theater-goer, who grew up in Baltimore (Md.). The photographs document prominent actors, actresses, and opera singers from the 1870’s to the early 1900’s. Many of which performed with the Chicago Grand Opera Company. The company traveled to Philadelphia (Pa.) for several months each year and also frequented Baltimore, putting on productions at the Lyric Theatre. The Peale Museum used some of Hambleton’s collection of photographs to build an exhibit on the history of theater from the late 1800’s to the 1940’s. Also included are prints from “The Theatre,” a magazine and review published monthly by Clement Scott, a critic for the Daily Telegraph in London.

Scope and Contents

The collection is divided into three series based on content. Series I contains photographs of actors, actresses, opera singers, and performances ranging in date from the 1870’s to 1912, which are arranged by size and alphabetically by actor last name. Several of the photographs have handwritten notes on the back about the performance and production company related to the image. “The Theatre” prints, Series II, are organized by date of publication. Those which a specific date could not be determined were included with similar items for a best approximation of date. Series III includes photographs from a Peale Museum exhibition on the history of theater and are organized by size and alphabetically by the performer’s last name. These items are similar to the photographs in Series I.

Items in Box 2 were found after the collection had been processed and added in 2015.
