Biographical / Historical
Richard Quincy (Moco) Yardley, was a native of Baltimore and a veteran of World War I. After both parents died, he discontinued his studies at Friends School and an artist uncle arranged for him to take classes at Maryland Institute of Art. In 1923 he began working as an artist in the news department of the Evening Sun and after a few years transferred to the promotion department, and in 1934 he returned to the news department and soon was producing cartoons on variety of local and national topics. When the Sun’s editorial cartoonist left in 1949, Yardley stepped into that position, which he held until retiring in 1969. He was in poor health and had stopped drawing several years before his death in 1979.

The collection is organized into four series.
- Series I: Printed Material
- Clippings and publications about or mentioning Yardley, a variety of publications illustrated , cartoons, a poster, and reproductions of artwork including maps by Yardley, and miscellaneous items about Rock Hill, Maryland.
- Series II: Artwork
- Drawings (a few added to reproductions of Yardley maps), drawings for cartoons, and courtroom illustration.
- Series III: Photographs
- Artwork by Yardley; Yardley at Shenandoah Downs, and with wife, and others.
- Series IV: Artifacts
- Several printing plates for cartoons; Transferred to Museum Collection - 3 ceramic pieces reproducing Yardley’s Map of Baltimore and Surroundings produced for Hutzler’s centennial, and a plate signed by Yardley and decorated with drawing of chef holding a crab.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Collection was donated by Allen D. Young in June 2017. As a boy, Young lived in Round Bay, Maryland, where the Yardley had a summer residence and regularly participated in community events, drawing and giving away caricatures and cartoons. Young admired Yardley and later in life began collecting his work. Over time, items were purchased from bookstores, antique shops, Craigslist, and e-Bay. Around 2008 Young acquired pieces from the collection of Yardley’s close friend and accountant. The subsequent owner of Yardley’s Round Bay house contributed Yardley’s map of Anne Arundel County, cut from the wall where it had been applied as decoupage. Young also acquired images that Yardley had been painted on the garage wall at his house in Baltimore.
Scope and Contents
The Richard Q. Yardley collection consists of 6 boxes and 3 oversize folders of materials relating to the artwork and life of Baltimore Sun cartoonist Richard Q. Yardley. Items include printed material, artwork, photographs, and artifacts. Four of the artifacts, listed in the container list below, were transferred to the Museum Department's collection.
