Biographical / Historical
Harry Hughes (1926 -) was born on November 13, 1926 in Easton, Maryland. Prior to his election as the 57th Governor of Maryland in 1978, Hughes was an attorney and began his political career as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates where he served from 1955-1959. In 1959 he was elected to the Maryland State Senate, representing District 15 comprised of Caroline, Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne’s, and Talbot counties. From 1971 to 1978 he was Maryland’s Secretary of Transportation. In 1978, he defeated Republican John Glenn Beall Jr. to claim the Governorship of Maryland, serving from 1979 to 1987.

Scope and Contents
The Harry Hughes Gubernatorial Campaign Photograph Collection contains 311, 35 mm negatives. The photographs were taken at various campaign related functions in 1978 and 1978 including a fundraiser with then President Jimmy Carter and Hughe’s Gubernatorial Inauguration on January 17, 1979. Contact sheets were created for some of the negatives and are included in the folders. The descriptions for the photographs were taken from the original envelopes containing the negatives.
