Biographical Note

Howard Hanford Hopkins, II (1848-1906) was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the son of Dr. Howard Hanford Hopkins, I (1814-1850) of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and Mary A. McConkey of Baltimore. Hopkins II studied at St. Timothy’s Hall in Catonsville, Maryland and graduated from the medical department of the University of Maryland in 1869. That same year he also married Margaret Mantz Downey (b. 1850), the daughter of William and Margaret Jane Downey of New Market, Maryland. Their children were Mary McConkey Hopkins; William Downey Hopkins; Howard Hanford Hopkins, III (1875-1918); and James Stephenson.

In 1875, Hopkins II and his family moved to the town of New Market in Frederick County. He converted a double brick house on Main Street to a home and office where he established a medical practice in competition with his brother-in-law, Dr. Jesse Wright Downey. In addition to his duties as a physician, Hopkins II was also a talented photographer, musician, and herpetologist.
