Biographical / Historical
Mary Mactier Latrobe (born 1873) and Edna Claiborne Latrobe (1881-1949) were the daughters of Richard Steuart and Mary Tenant Mactier Latrobe. The sisters had a privileged upbringing and were related to many prominent Baltimore figures. The family lived on Eager Street in Baltimore, Maryland for many years, but often spent long stretches abroad traveling in Europe. Mary married Englishman Colonel Arthur P. D. Harris of the Indian Army in 1907. The couple lived in India until Harris was reassigned in Europe. Edna remained unmarried and worked for many civic causes. During World War I, both of the sisters volunteered for the Red Cross. Edna served with the American branch in France, where she assisted in the canteen, and Mary worked for the British Red Cross. In 1926, Edna went to Russia as a Field Inspector for the American Committee for the Relief of Russian Children. She continued her civic work throughout her life.
