Biographical / Historical

The Cohens of Maryland initially arrived in Baltimore in 1808 as a widowed mother (Judith) with 7 children: Jacob I. Jr., Philip I, Maia I, Mendes I, Benjamin I, David I, and Joshua I. These children and their descendants became financiers, railroad owners, leaders in the medical, legal and engineering professions, lovers of the arts and leaders in Baltimore society. Some of their accomplishments include: founders of Jacob I. Cohen, Jr. and Brothers Banking Firm; proposed Academy of Music; President, City Bank Richmond; President, Portland Trust Company of Oregon, first Jew elected to the Baltimore City Council, author of “A Woman’s Trip to Alaska”; and served in the military.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 61 photographs and cartes des visites of various descendants spanning several generations of Cohen, Etting, Levy and Lopez families. Also included are photographs of a few family friends including: G. Dobkin, Esq. and Simon Teackle Wallis. The photographs appear to have been cut from an album. The collection transferred from Portrait Vertical File (filed under Cohen family).
