Abstract

Lawson, Slater, and Slater & Roy were merchants who sold general sundries including hardware, lumber, clothes, and household goods which for the most part were imported from England. Various businesses operated from the late 1700s through the 1820s. This collection encompasses 1 company and three of those merchants as well as family members. Thisincludes Lawson, Slater, and Slater & Roy. The collection contains business correspondence, bills and receipts, promissory notes, shipping manifests, ledgers, and legal correspondence.

Biographical / Historical

1. Slater & Roy, 84 Market Street, Baltimore, merchants had a store that had general supplies, hardware, building supplies, household goods, cloth and fabric most imported from England.

2. William Slater (died July 27, 1813), merchant died at the residence of Colonel John Cresswell.

3. Elizabeth Slater, Daughter of William Slater, married William Singleton March 20, 1793.

4. William Singleton, died Tuesday August 16, 1803 at the age of 46

5. Ann Sharp Slater, married Stephan Lawson, d of the late William Slater on July 24, 1825.

6. Stephen Lawson, husband of Ann Slater, corporal in Captain Magruder’s company American Artillerists. War of 1812

7. John Roy, merchant, died October 15,1820, at age 40. He married Rebecca Slater on May 27, 1806

8. Richard Lawson (1750 -1803), merchant, married D. Parkinson on October 29, 1791, died at age 54. Lived in Albermarle Street.
